| For those who don't remember the Inquisition, which most
experts estimate took the lives of between 50 and 120 million people, a common
form of punishment for a transgressor was to be burned alive in a ceremony
called the "auto de fe." This was one of the most sacred and
celebrated festivals of the Church: the burning of heretics.
